Varicose Veins

Varicose veins occur when a valve in your veins ( a vessel which transports blood back to the heart) malfunctions. A variety of conditions may cause these valves to malfunction such as : age - varicose veins usually appear btw ages 30-70 and get progressively worse; Genetics - if there is a family history of varicose veins then thee is greater chance that a you will; Gender - women are more likely to develop varicose veins due to hormonal changes. Women's hormones tend to relax vein walls; Obesity - being over weight puts added pressure on your veins; standing for prolonged periods - your blood does not flow as well if you are in the same position for prolonged periods of time.

Varicose veins are usually the result of the breakdown of the valves in the great saphenous vein. This vein runs inside through the thigh into the lower leg. When the valves in this vein malfunction it allows blood to flow backwards causing it to pool in the vein. This pooling enlarges the vein and presents as varicosities. Varicose veins loose their ability to transport blood and function normally. Varicose veins are not only unsightly but can compromise the nutrition of the skin and lead to eczema, edema and ulceration of the lower leg.
