Light-Based Therapy
Treatment of Unwanted Facial Spider Veins or “Telangiectasias”
Although lower extremity vessels are treated with sclerotherapy, such treatment is not typically performed on the face. Instead, small vascular lesions and facial spider veins (including those seen with rosacea) are treated with light treatments. The thermal or heat energy delivered from these devices triggers the vascular lesions to close, similar to the way spider veins on the legs respond to sclerotherapy.
Intense Pulsed Light® is one such light-based therapy. Treatment of these facial veins is cosmetic; it is not covered by health insurance. IPL® is the device of choice at Cosmetic Laser Centers℠ – the sister company of Vein Institute of Pittsburgh℠ – for treating facial telangiectasias.
